What does P0090 fault code mean, what does P0090 fault code mean and how to fix it will look for answers to your questions. Although this error code is a common problem, it may indicate a different fault in some makes and models. For this reason, if your vehicle has a fault code P0090, be sure to refer to the service book that is suitable for the car brand and model.

In today’s cars and for about 30 years, the computer system has been used. This system is called the engine control unit (ECU).The ECU continuously controls the engine and its components. The fuel pressure regulator is one of the controlled parts. The electronic fuel pressure regulator is controlled by the ECU. This regulator acts as a valve. This valve is controlled by a directed motor. Battery voltage and ground signal are needed to provide energy. When the electronic fuel pressure regulator applies voltage to the servo motor, the valve opens at small intervals and the fuel pressure is raised. We can think of it like the faucet in our house. The more we turn the tap, the more the flow of water will increase, and as the regulator is turned on, the amount of incoming fuel will change.

The location of the fuel pressure sensor is usually located in the hose line to the fuel injectors. The fuel pressure regulator and sensor usually use separate electrical circuits. However, in some vehicles it depends on a single circuit.

P0090 Fault Code Meaning : The ECU continuously calculates the data from the sensor and regulator. Accordingly, it adjusts the fuel distribution and ignition of the vehicle. When checking the regulator, the ECU issues the error code P0090 Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit Open if it detects an opening in the circuit.

P0090 Fault Code Symptoms

Excessively high fuel pressure can cause very serious problems in the car. In particular, fuel sent to the exhaust system without burning in the engine will cause the catalytic converter to be blocked. But in general, it gives the following symptoms.

  • Late start of the engine
  • Black smoke due to the mixture rich in exhaust
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • The smell of fuel inside the car
  • Burning of the engine malfunction lamp
  • Illumination of catalytic converter fault light

P0090 Fault Code Causes

  • Cable wear, short circuit or gap in the fuel pressure regulator control circuit
  • Fuel pressure regulator failure
  • ECU programming error
  • Blockage in the fuel line
  • Failure of the fuel pump and the variability of the fuel flow rate due to this

P0090 Fault Code Repair, Fixes and Solutions

First of all, the first thing you need to do is to check the wires located just above the regulator. Especially in the cables, things like an opening, peeling and breakage are very likely. Because the temperature of the engine tends to damage the regulator installation. Then what you need to do is switch to the diagnostic technique. Connect your car to a computer with OBD-2 fault codes and scan for other codes besides the P0090 error code. If possible, repair and delete any other code that comes out. If the code is immediately deleted, inspect the regulator for voltage and ground. Also test that the fuses of the regulator are intact. If it continues to give the error code, the problem is in the regulator. In this case, you will need to change it.
