How Long is the Timing Chain Life?

What is the timing chain, known as timing rope in internal combustion engines, and what does it do? What is the service life of the timing chain? In this article, we will talk about the timing chain.

The timing belt or chain has a very important task in terms of the operation of the motor. From the moment you press the starter, a combustion occurs in the engine. With the pressure of the explosion resulting from this combustion, the pistons are pushed downwards. Thus, the crankshaft begins to rotate. However, for combustion, it is necessary to suck air into the engine and to expel the gas (exhaust gas) resulting from combustion. Three of these have an eccentric shaft and valves. The timing of these is very important. When the exhaust valves are closed, the intake valves are open. The intake valves are closed when the exhaust valves are open. This is called eccentric timing. The power required for the camshaft to rotate is supplied by the crankshaft. The crankshaft is below the engine and the camshaft is above. The part that provides the connection between these two shafts is called a timing tool. Chain timing is used in many vehicles, especially diesel engines. The adjustment of the exhaust and intake valves is called sente.

How Long is the Timing Chain Life?

As with everything that moves in the engine, the timing chain has a service life. But it is much longer than the strap. While the timing belt needs to be changed every 4 years or 80 thousand kilometers, the chain has a much longer lifespan. Because the belt is made of rubber rubber that we know, while the chain is made of metal. The timing chain is just like bicycle chains. The life of the timing chain is known as 250 thousand kilometers or 10 years. It also gives a number of symptoms before breaking. Of course, the interest is the deterioration of the engine’s stock adjustment due to stretching. In addition, as the chain flexes, it shakes, causing the engine to work audibly. When the Sente setting is disturbed, it will give symptoms such as engine stuttering, loss of performance and increase in fuel consumption.

The way to tell if your vehicle has a timing chain or belt is to look at the service manual. Because the feature of the belt used there is written. But if you can’t get to the booklet, look online. If you still can’t find it, look in the timing box. If it is plastic, it is a belt, but if the timing housing is metal, a chain is used.

The timing chain is not sold as a single. In auto parts, the set known as the camshaft set includes a chain, recirculation pump and tension bearing. A long and arduous workmanship is required to replace it. After the replacement process, which takes about 4-5 hours, you can use your vehicle again with peace of mind.

Timing change is an issue that should never be neglected. When it breaks, the pistons hit the valves. First the valves are bent, then the pistons hitting the top cover are damaged. As a result, you may have to have your vehicle engined.
